Happy Saturday, and welcome to CEO Speaks for Saturday, June 15th, 2024. This event is sponsored exclusively by Second Wind Consultants, which specializes in article 9, out-of-court transactional restructurings.
This week, London called, and when it did, nearly 200 delegates answered. They were part of an eclectic and visionary experience at the 2024 TMA Global International Symposium and European Annual, where we Revolutionized, Rebelled, and Rocked together with friends and colleagues from 18 countries in a multi-day celebration of TMA’s internationalism.
As shared by TMA Europe President Tyrone Cortman in his welcome remarks at the opening of the TMA European Annual Conference, the lyrics of the Clash song London Calling, released in 1979, reflected the concerns felt by Joe Strummer, the band’s lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist about the state of the world at that time.
Similarly to then, today’s business and geopolitical issues represent some of the greatest challenges our world has ever seen, and this week’s TMA conference spoke to many of those issues in practical and informative ways.
An EACTP sold-out workshop presented a case study to our attendees, showing the importance of being a TMA Certified Turnaround Professional.
A keynote by Dr. Frauke Eßer and the fireside chat with her, facilitated by TMA Europe Conference co-chair Christian Schmidt, addressed the changing world order and its influence on our economy, and in that looked at geopolitical upset, manufacturing challenges, issues related to sustainability, supply chain issues, and climate change.
Programs like the International Symposium Network of Women panel, ‘A Journey Through Inter conditional & Interlocking Schemes of Arrangement, moderated by TMA Europe NOW chair Anna Nolan, featured prominent women practitioners from around the world, were juxtapositioned by the following day’s NOW Breakfast, which brought together a group of successful women of our industry, who while generationally diverse, took on a discussion of challenges overcome, and those that still exist for women in the workplace.
The optionality that brought the world together around panel topics that included ‘The Alternative Dispute Resolution Revolution’, moderated by TMA Philadelphia/Wilmington member Katarina Earle, and a UK and US-focused panel discussing the stresses of retail and real estate, moderated by TMA UK board member Andrew Pepper, was just the beginning of a two-day eclectic TMA journey.
Our NextGen attendees were treated to a Strategic Negotiations Workshop led by Oxford University Professor Horst Eidenmuller. We also hosted Rapid Fire Masterclasses led by industry leaders from around the world, bringing cutting-edge complex restructuring issues from past and current cases to the conference’s main stage.
In the closing keynote, Sam McAlister, the former BBC Newsnight producer and now the best-selling author of Scooped, shared fascinating anecdotes about the infamous Prince Andrew interview, her incredible journey that included becoming a barrister, how she found her way to the BBC, and those transformative years for her.
In a week that elevated what it means to be a member of a worldwide organization with a brand that blankets the world with goodwill, we reinforced the core value proposition of building one’s personal brand and trusted professional relationships through TMA.
With a record number of North American participants who joined for the conference also came two TMA firsts, including a first-ever TMA Global Executive Board meeting held live internationally and a first-ever TMA chapter signing ceremony, as those in attendance at the conference bared wittiness to TMA India being welcomed into the big tent, with its president Rocky Gupta present to execute the chapter’s affiliation agreement in London.
TMA revolutionized, rebelled, and rocked in elevating member value and connectivity with distinction and definitiveness, sending a resounding message to the world that TMA is the defining organization in the corporate reorganization, restructuring, and corporate health space.
We are TMA proud of the vision and creativity of TMA Europe, conference co-chairs Christian Schmidt and Gregoire Bouille, and all those on the TMA Europe Representation Committee who brought this TMA world showcase to life.
With the close of the international symposium and TMA European Annual, we will next turn our attention to the NextGen Leadership Conference in Toronto, Canada. This conference will bring the best and the brightest of TMA’s up-and-coming leaders together on July 24th and 25th for an always hands-on, connected experience that paves the way for great professional development through real-time, relevant learning.
As summer kicks into full swing, we will begin planning for the TMA Annual Conference, which will be held at Lowell’s Philadelphia from October 15th to 18th. The Annual planning committee is being formed, and we will announce the start of what we will build in the city of Love this fall.
Lastly, today, on this segment of member moments, we celebrate TMA Europe President Tyrone Courtman, who, in his role as TMA Europe President and the many TMA roles he has held before, stands as an example of TMA leadership for others to emulate and follow.
Tyrone has served as a TMA UK board member, and its President was a founder of EACTP, a TMA Europe board member, and is now TMA Europe’s president.
Tyrone, with great forethought and vision, has already in his short tenure as TAM Europe President, refined the value proposition for TMA Europe, spearheaded one of TMA Europe’s most innovative programs ever, with the launch of its first TMA Live event held at Moterworld in Stuttgart, Germany, and was an integral part of the planning of this years TMA European Annual Conference groundbreaking programs.
At his week’s TMA Global International Symposium and European Annual Conference, Tyrone set out his vision for the future of TMA Europe, how to improve chapter engagement, and set the groundwork for TMA Europe’s strategic path forward in sharing that vision with the TMA Global Executive Board and European Chapter Presidents.
This is leadership excellence, which assures our defining organization remains virtual and vibrant in a changing world for our professionals, and for that, we are #TMAPROUD.
