Happy Saturday, and welcome to CEO Speaks for Saturday, March 23, 2024, sponsored exclusively by Second Wind Consultants, specializing in article 9, out-of-court, transactional restructurings.
Spring has sprung in TMA nation, from sea to shining sea and around the world, and this week, especially from around the world, there is much to celebrate at TMA in this season of renewal.
This week, I, along with TMA Global President Allen Wilen and TMA Europe President Tyrone Cortman, journeyed to Leiden, Netherlands, where we joined with the European Association of Certified Turnaround Professionals, who, for a second year, held a ‘Turbocharged Turnaround Workshop’ at the historic Leiden University Law School.
This two-day intensive program covered an array of topics, kicked off by Jan Andrianse, Professor of Turnaround Management, Leiden Law School, who led a program entitled, ‘Back to the Future of Turnaround Skills’, where a robust discussion about the future of restructuring, and particularly the influence and affects Artificial Intelligence will have on the future of our profession ensued.
On the second day of the program, I had the privilege to moderate a discussion on the ‘Significance of Skill Evolution and Upskilling,’ where Allen Wilen and Tyrone Cortman engaged the workshop participants in a discussion and debate on the types of skills in a post-pandemic, partially virtual and technology-driven world, restructuring professionals need to have to navigate a restructuring successfully.
The impact of tech and AI, the importance of face-to-face communication, creating trusted relationships, and leveraging from lessons learned from failed business turnarounds were just some of what was discussed, and how these important skills complement core finance, management, and legal proficiencies for restructurings today to be effective.
The balance of the workshop, led by an eclectic mix of educators and professionals from throughout Europe, included TMA Europe and EACTP luminary Alan Tilley, UK professor and barrister Mark Watson Gandy, German business leader Dr. Jonas Steeger, as well as Dutch leaders CEO Barbra Keurntjes, Manager Change and Communications expert Karien Ris, as well as Romania Certified Professional Eugen Lascu.
Kudos to EACTP board member Maria Pombo for the vision and passion put into this outstanding effort, furthering an understanding of the importance of the TMA Certified Turnaround Professional designation as it continues to grow more prominent in Europe and around the world.
This week’s EACTP program, the beginning of our international spring, will culminate with the TMA Global International Symposium and Europe Annual, which will be held June 10th-12th in London, UK, where some of the best and brightest restructuring professionals in the world, will come together under the banner of TMA.
This special opportunity, now in its second year, is expected to bring together nearly 300 TMA professionals from around the world and will include programs that will illustrate how our international organization provides support, mentorship, education, and leadership to our vast community of nearly 10,000 worldwide members.
We look forward to welcoming our TMA Global Executive Board, TMA Europe representation committee, Europe chapter presidents, and UK chapter leaders and members for what will be a defining three days aimed at bringing the best of TMA’s unique international flavor to the forefront and something we hope you will be a part of too.

Lastly, today in the next segment of ‘Member Moments,’ where we shout out to members who have done something momentous and memorable that stands for and supports the mission of TMA, we celebrate the vision and innovation of TMA Europe leaders Tyrone Cortman, and Christian Schmitt for the launch of TMA Live, a next-generation education concept that blends virtual education with real-world immersion, fostering connections among TMA members and restructuring experts within specific industries for peer to peer learning and networking.
In the TMA live inaugural program, ‘An Industry in Transformation-Challenges for Automotive Suppliers from Strategic, Operational and Financial Perspectives’, this groundbreaking endeavor included a private tour of the Mercedes Benz factory in Stuttgart, Germany, where participants met with Mercedes leadership in this real-time, real-world relevant TMA education experience.
I hope spending time on this international journey today reinforces, for one and all, the reach, power, and purpose that TMA serves around the globe. It is special to have the breadth and depth of opportunities to experience the inventiveness for which TMA stands because of the vision and passion of our leaders and members who show how #TMALightsTheWay.
As always, thanks for taking the time to listen today. And thanks again to our TMA CEO Speaks exclusive sponsor, Second Wind Consultants, for your support of TMA and this podcast.
As TMA Lights The Way, your input is critical, your contributions paramount, and your engagement the foundation that will create a better TMA for all our members.
