The Florida Chapter of the Turnaround Management
Association (TMA) was named the “Most Improved Chapter of the Year” Sunday at
the TMA 2001 Annual Conference Awards Banquet October 14 at The Breakers in Palm
Springs, Fla. TMA (

is the only international nonprofit association dedicated to the development of
stronger economy through corporate renewal. This award is given to the chapter
that has demonstrated significant improvement during the past year in the areas
of membership, programming, community service, communication and involvement in
TMA.
In accepting the award for the
chapter, President Chris Curtin, vice president at Bankers Mutual Capital Corp
in North Palm Beach, said, “I think that this shows two things, one, the level
of interest in the state of Florida for the revitalization of businesses needing
help and two, the hard work of my TMA board members and fellow turnaround
professionals. “
The Florida TMA Chapter (
www.tmaflorida.org
) began a concentrated
effort two years ago to revitalize its presence in Florida after a merger of the
Central Florida and South Florida chapters into one statewide chapter. Based in
the Palm Beach area, the chapter has expanded into four satellite meeting
locations in Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Miami. Its first Jacksonvile
meeting will be held October 24 at the Adams Mark Hotel with former Congressman
and Senate candidate Bill McCollum as speaker.
Some highlights of the chapter’s
2000-2001 accomplishments are:
- Increased membership by almost 50%, currently at 89
members
- Developed an active, 15-member board of directors
- Moved from a $0 balance to $13,000 in its treasury

Developed a
chapter Web site with six paid sponsors,

- Held its first golf outing with 125 participants, 30
sponsors and $10,000 in income
- Began a university outreach program to sponsor
selected students for TMA membership
- Increased attendance at all programs from 20 to 35 a meeting
The
Turnaround Management Association (www.turnaround.org), with its international
headquarters in Chicago, has 4,500 members, who include financial advisors,
turnaround practitioners, consultants, accountants, lenders, attorneys,
academics, judicial and government personnel who participate in corporate
financial turnarounds and restructurings. Members adhere to a Code of Ethics
specifying high standards of professionalism, integrity and competence. TMA
activities, including the Certified Turnaround Professional program, are
supported by 32 active chapters, including three in Canada and one in New
Zealand, one in the United Kingdom and a chapter in formation in
Australia
