TMA Annual Convention Draws More Than 600 Corporate Restructuring Professionals
Oct 25, 2011
SAN DIEGO – Three U.S. bankruptcy judges and top-level corporate restructuring and bankruptcy executives anchor panel sessions on competing plans in Chapter 11 cases, restructuring pitfalls for small and mid-size businesses, landmark bankruptcy rulings, municipal turnarounds, and more at the 2011 Turnaround Management Association Annual Convention starting today at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.
The Chicago-based Turnaround Management Association is the premier professional association for individuals involved in corporate restructuring, turnaround management and distressed investing, and has more than 9,000 members in 48 regional chapters worldwide.
A conference in San Diego would not be complete without addressing technology. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, a longtime Internet entrepreneur who most recently co-founded The Obvious Corporation, delivers the keynote speech at the opening general session on Wednesday, October 26.
Later at lunch, UCLA Law Professor Lynn M. LoPucki, the architect of one of the most comprehensive databases on large, public-company bankruptcies, discusses the Success-Modeling Project. Funded by grants from TMA, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, the project aims to develop tools that measure the difficulty of a turnaround and discover treatments most likely to help companies succeed.
During the convention, TMA spotlights the achievements of industry professionals who changed the fate of businesses across a broad swath of industries. The 2011 Turnaround of the Year Awards recognize 34 restructuring professionals who helped faltering businesses rebound to either stand on their own or be sold. The 2011 Transaction of the Year Awards honor 37 restructuring professionals who crafted non-operational transactions that had the most impact on struggling businesses.
A middle school teacher from New York and a high school teacher from India will receive the Butler-Cooley Excellence in Teaching Award, which honors K-12 teachers who have demonstrated their capacity to change the outcome of students’ lives and the communities where they teach.
