TMA launches first TMAssist business recovery workshops in Louisiana

A TMAssist team of seasoned turnaround professionals experienced in helping businesses in crisis recover from catastrophic events and economic downturns will be in Louisiana December 14 and 15 to offer free business recovery workshops to businesses owners and senior executives affected by Hurricane Katrina.

This is the first team of volunteers to participate in TMAssist, a new public service program that includes free seminars/workshops, educational materials and an online resource center for businesses.

Members of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA )’s Louisiana Chapter, led by President Hank Arnold, were instrumental in developing the workshops, along with TMAssist chair Jim Ross and TMA Vice President of Public Affair Jim Matthews. Dan Dooley, Chicago/Midwest Chapter2005 president and principal at Morris-Anderson & Associates Ltd, assembled the first team of presenters, which include Long Island Chapter member Diane Pfadenhauer, president of Employment Practices Advisors Inc.; Chicago/Midwest Chapter member Anu Singh, director at Huron Consulting Group; Louisiana Chapter member Vincent Liuzza, president of Liuzza Management Consulting LLC: and Detroit Chapter President Patrick O’Keefe, owner of O’Keefe & Associates Consulting.

The first Business Recovery workshop for business owners and executives will be Wednesday, December 14, in the Noland Hall at the Lod Cook Alumni Center on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, in cooperation with the Louisiana Small Business Development Center network. The December 15 workshop is in cooperation with the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) at the Jefferson Orleans South in Metairie. Both are free but registration is required. “This is a unique opportunity for local businesses to tap into the expertise of this multidisciplinary group dedicated to corporate renewal,” said Hank Arnold, Louisiana Chapter president. “The survival of so many businesses and their future success are at stake. At the workshop, tools and techniques to respond to the crisis and move forward will be presented.”

The workshop content will focus on the steps necessary to salvage a business enterprise following a disaster. The presenters will draw upon lessons learned from TMA members in turnarounds of thousands of companies and will provide a roadmap for improving the chances of recovery. Specific topics covered include:

  • Dealing with your debt and your banker
  • Employee retention
  • Strategic planning
  • The 5 stages of the turnaround process
  • Aids in determining whether your business still be viable in the new competitive environment
  • Whether you should reopen, sell, or close
  • Finding non-banking sources of capital
  • Cash flow management
  • Dealing with landlords and leases
  • What Ch. 11 can and cannot do for you
