TMA Annual Awards Program

2015 Turnaround and transaction awards

ABOUT THE AWARDS PROGRAM
TMA honors excellence through its annual awards program, which recognizes achievements in the categories listed below.

TURNAROUND OF THE YEAR AWARD
A turnaround means more than adjusting a balance sheet. When corporate value is on the line, jobs are at stake and time is the enemy, turnaround professionals step in to establish effective operations, implement solid management, improve cash flow and increase production, in addition to the countless other factors that contribute to the triumphant recovery of a struggling company.

Because TMA understands that each turnaround is unique, it has created distinct categories to recognize outstanding turnarounds. The awards are presented to the individual, who together with a team of turnaround professionals, has orchestrated the most successful turnaround in the following categories:

Small Company (company revenue at onset of turnaround was less than $50 million USD)
Mid-Size Company (company revenue at onset of turnaround was $50 million to $299 million USD)
Large Company (company revenue at onset of turnaround was $300 million to $1 billion USD)
Mega Company (company revenue at onset of turnaround was at least $1 billion USD)
International Company (company with significant cross-border operations)
Pro Bono (no fees in exchange for services); entry must demonstrate financial stability
Non-Profit A tax exempt organization without shareholders that uses its surplus net assets to achieve its mission

TRANSACTION OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Transaction of the Year awards recognizes the individuals who orchestrate a non-operational restructuring, including merger and acquisition, sale, loan, liquidation, etc., to preserve value in a struggling business. Entry categories include:

Small Company (company revenue at time of transaction was less than $50 million USD)
Mid-Size Company (company revenue at time of transaction was $50 million to $299 million USD)
Large Company (company revenue at time of transaction was $300 million to $1 billion USD)
Mega Company (company revenue at time of transaction was at least $1 billion USD)

outstanding individual awards

Outstanding Individual Contribution Award

In an industry where time is never plentiful, it takes a dedicated individual to complement professional pursuits with volunteerism. Whether assisting with a pro bono case or serving in a TMA leadership position, this individual raises the awareness and stature of the corporate restructuring industry. Winners of this award are TMA members with a long history of industry experience who have made significant contributions to TMA over many years. This award honors the dedication of those outstanding individuals who give back to their profession. The 2014 application period is now closed.

Emerging Leader Award

Emerging leaders bring a vibrancy and energy to volunteer organizations,
from fresh ideas to cutting edge technology suggestions. Without these innovative perspectives, an association would flounder. The winner in this category can be an active NextGen volunteer or a professional new to the turnaround and restructuring field. This award honors the dedication of one such individual. The 2014 application period is now closed.

CARL MARKS STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

The Carl Marks Student Paper Competition was established in 2003 to recognize outstanding student achievement in the field of corporate renewal, as well as provide research that may offer new insight into the profession and expand TMA’s university outreach. The program is administered by the Turnaround Management Association, the only international non-profit association dedicated to corporate renewal and turnaround management, and is funded with the support of Carl Marks Advisory Group LLC.

Papers are judged in two categories: case study and theoretical/conceptual. First and second place prizes will be awarded in each category.
